We've tested a lot of tactics

Don't just take our word for it though. In Football Manager 2020, the game encourages you to build a philosophy, something that can take a long time. Sometimes, instant success isn't the be all end all.

Without further ado, here's our recommended formations for quick success.

4-4-2: Simple & Effective

3 of our top 10 tested tactics are based on the original 4-4-2 formation. It's super simple and effective. What exactly should we be looking for when setting up a 4-4-2? We should be looking at reliable full-backs, speedy wingers who have a good cross and two central midfielders with powerful engines.

Why is the 4-4-2 so effective?

In my opinion, it works well because there's absolutely nothing complex about it. Therefore, there's no way it can confuse your players.

5-2-3-0: What are Strikers?

In Football Manager 2020 you don't need strikers to produce the goods. You just need a good system, some good players and abracadabra, the World is your oyster. Our number two tactic on the tactic testing results list is Blue Blood Sword, a fantastic strikerless solution bound to devastate your opposition. Fast-flowing and direct. It proves that three at the back and no strikers is the way forward.

Why is the 5-2-3-0 so effective?

It works well because it has a solid structure. Each aspect of the team has a defined purpose.

In Football Manager 2020, the game pushes you to focus on long-term success as opposed to the good old fashioned plug and play approach.

Any formation can be successful if you give it a chance. You can't expect to have the right players to play Pep Guardiola's short passing possession style unless you're oil-rich.

I'd encourage you to be willing to try new things. Don't lose motivation if results aren't working out. You can even build your long-term philosophy whilst using some plug and play for quick success. Either way, you're going to have a lot of fun winning everything whether it's season one or season four.

Something, something, See you on the other side.
